Who are the top 10 producing countries in the world?
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, in 2013, this was the wine production by country in 2013:
No surprise in front, as France and Italy dominate the quality as well as the quantity, gathering 30% of worldwide production.
California wines have been renowned for many years now, as well as Spanish, Chilean, Austrlian, and Argentina wines. You can find them anywhere in Singapore today.
However, my personal shock was seeing China in 6th place! True, they have been producting the juice for ages, but you can never see them on the store shelves... or at least I haven't.
But here is what I found out when digging a little further...
China consumes 90% of its own production, which means there is little to export. And yet their wines are starting to export to the US, among other countries. It seems like China is coming onto the international scene as a quality product as well: in 2011, they created a "Bordeaux vs Ningxia (Chinese province) wine test", in which similar wines were tested against one another; and out of 5 competitions, Chinese wines won 4 of them!
Among the best wine producing regions in China are Ningxia, Tonghua in Jilin, Yibin in Sichuan. The Yantai region produces over 40% of China's wine.
