This week, we’re continuing on Bordeaux wines, as this region has been the root of wine making and vineyards for the last 300 years. It is certainly the most diverse wine region in the world, combining many grapes and soils, and has inspired other countries in their wine development. And quite a fair number of Bordeaux winemakers have actually been globetrotting around the world to “civilise” the techniques of wine making.
Introducing Chateau de Fieuzal 2003, a Pessac-Leognan wine.
Context: located in the Graves region, this Chateau, which is 400 years old now, has received the Grand Cru appellation for its region. The average age of the vines is 30 years, which means the grapes are now mature; moreover, the winemakers plant the vines closely packed together, to force the vines to compete for nutrients and dig deeper into the soil for nutrition.
This vineyard consists of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 4.5% Cabernet Franc and 2.5% Petit Verdot, so we are looking at an opposite structure to the Begadanet we tried last week.
That means we should be finding blackcurrant tastes, with spicy notes and bell pepper hints. Due to the oak barrel treatment, we could have some leather, wood, and vanilla hints as well.
The 2003 Vintage was rated 90 points (out of 100) by Wine Spectator, one of the industries’ main critics.
Appearance: Bright and clear, this wine is of deep ruby color
Nose: Clean, the nose shows medium (+) intensity aromas of ripe black fruit such as blackcurrant, blackberry, dried fruit of fig, pungent spice of liquorice, notes of leather, oak notes of cedar and vanilla, maturity notes of savory. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with medium acidity, medium (+) tannin of ripe but a bit dusty in texture, the wine has medium alcohol and a medium (+) body, showing medium (+) intensity on flavors, including black fruit of blackberry and bilberry, oak notes of vanilla and cedar, some vegetal notes of black tea. The wine has a medium (+) finish.
Conclusion: Good quality Pessac-Leognan with a good strong nose of high complexity, the palate is balanced, with a robust structure. The palate demonstrates plenty of ripe black fruit but also having other interesting flavors, with good concentration and finish.
I'd personally give it a 17.5/20 rating, which qualifies for the very good wines for me.
